LC ListCombinator

Classes, teams & events

Create fair random pairs for classes, teams, and events

A pairing round should be easy to rerun, easy to explain, and clear about unmatched entries. Use one list for partner rotation or two lists for cross-group matching without uploading names.

The recurring problem

Why make this a workflow?

Manual pairing is slow and can accidentally repeat people or favor the same combinations. A visible shuffle and pairing step makes the round easier to review and repeat.

Inspectable pipeline

Recommended steps

  1. 1

    Prepare the lists

Paste one participant, role, station, or player per line and remove accidental blank rows.

  2. 2

    Choose the mode

Use one list for peer pairs or add a second list when every entry should match across two groups.

  3. 3

    Generate a round

Shuffle locally, pair each eligible entry at most once, and report an odd or unmatched entry.

  4. 4

    Review the output

Copy, download, or send the pairs to another list tool for cleanup or formatting.

Concrete example

Input sketch

Students: Ava, Noah, Mia, Liam, Sofia
Mentors: Priya, Omar, Chen

Reviewed output

Ava — Chen
Noah — Priya
Mia — Omar
Unmatched: Liam, Sofia

No repeated entry in a round

Each input row is used once at most, while duplicate rows remain visible as separate participants.

One or two list modes

Pair a single class or match people from separate roles, teams, or stations.

Private by default

Normal runs process names in the browser rather than sending the roster to a server.

Limits to review before production

  • Random pairing does not know personal conflicts, skill levels, or previous rounds unless you provide those rules separately.
  • An uneven list produces unmatched entries that need a human decision.
  • For public prize drawings, use a documented random seed and preserve the input and result record.

Questions about this workflow

Can I pair two different groups?

Yes. Put the first group in List A and the second group in List B to create cross-group matches.

What happens when the lists have different sizes?

The smaller list is fully matched and remaining entries are shown as unmatched.

Can I run another round?

Yes. Run the pairing step again to create a new shuffled round from the same inputs.
